Designing a dream...

Tom Hart Dyke’s ‘dream garden’ was born in the depths of despair, during his nine month kidnap ordeal.  His horticultural dream to create a garden full of plants collected from around the world, helped to keep him going during his darkest hours in captivity.  He vowed that if he ever made it out of the jungle alive, then he would set about creating his dream garden in the grounds of his ancestral home at Lullingstone Castle in Kent.  Tom’s kidnap ordeal ended in December 2000 with his safe return home to England.

In January 2004 Tom approached Adam S Bailey to design a layout for the garden which Tom could then plant up with species from around the world.

Taking Tom Hart Dyke's original, basic sketches made in the jungle during his capture in Panama, Adam helped Tom make his dream of a world map garden come true. From the early stages of Adam's technical drawings through to finally seeing the garden open to the public, Adam has travelled a horticultural journey with Tom.

Artist and gardener...

Redesigning the world - the World Garden Adam's involvement in the creation of the World Garden has been pivotal in creating a garden which is both unique and one which will stand the test of time.

Under the watchful eyes of a camera crew, the remarkable story of the creation of this garden can now be told. BBC2's continuing series "Return to Lullingstone Castle" series will chart the development of the garden, from Adam's early ideas and drawings through to seeing the garden being planted by Tom - currently on BBC2.

"Creating a garden like this is a unique opportunity and one which we hope will encourage children to explore the world map whilst learning about the plants which have arrived in the UK from thousands of miles away.", said Adam.

"From the very start we envisioned a garden which would tick all the boxes, with educational potential in the historical framework of Lullingstone Castle. It's more than just a garden of plants. We want to take visitors on a journey of discovery and ensure they take away memories of a garden which is quite different from any other."
