Period House Garden

Design Brief

A period home demands a very special type of garden, one which feels as if it was created along with the house and yet at the same time is alive with fresh, vibrant colours and has an occasional elegant twist, be it in the materials used or contemporary features such as furniture and lighting.

For this home in Blackheath the house is steeped in history and anything too modern could ironically look dated quicker than the house itself.  Therefore a careful selection of plants had to echo the period of the building, with materials such as Yorkstone giving the finished pathways a timeless elegance.

Blackheath garden before redesign

Above: Before...

The original garden, apart from being somewhat overgrown when the new owners moved in, was also a challenge in that it was very long and narrow. Consequently the garden needed to be opened up whilst at the same time linked by a series of rooms which flowed naturally from the house all the way to the far end, allowing a long vista. Traditional Yew hedges were deployed to divide the spaces, maintained at a height of 4ft to allow views over the top.
