THE EDEN PROJECT

Location: Bodelva, St Austell, Cornwall

Outside the Biomes

outside The Largest Conservatory in the World

Standing 240m long, 110m wide and 55m high, this view of the Humid Tropics Biome at Eden shows the impressive scale the project has achieved.  More than 2000 species are kept at a temperature between 18 and 35 degrees C.  A small army of misting units replace nature's equivalent rainfall.

The outer landscaping weaves a curvaceous network of paths along the steeped hillside down towards the biome link (restaurants) which tie the 'Humid Tropics Biome' and 'Warm Temperate Biome' together.

flags Angus Watt - Flag Landscapes

A celebratory artistic mix of colourful flags which symbolise not only the myriad array of plant forms to be found within the dome but also a quiet call to arms against Man's slow destruction and neglect of his home planet.

Humid Tropics Biome

humid tropics The world in a bubble

Plants from Malaysia, West Africa, Tropical South America and the Oceanic Islands grow together reaching full maturity thanks to the generous space provided by the domes.

Palms, rice, coffee, sugar, bananas, rubber and timber to name but a few are all grown.  Explanations are given as to their crucial part in nature's (and Man's) life cycle.

etfe The 'windows'

At first glance, the vast expanse of transparent honeycomb overhead may look like glass.  It is in fact ETFE (ethylenetetrafluoroethylene), a transparent foil formed into pillows 2m deep and consisting of 3 layers.  ETFE weighs less than 1% of the equivalent-sized glass.

up close Up close

Visitors can get up close to the growing inhabitants and read about many of the major plant groups' value as commercial and environmental commodities.

waterfall The waterfall

Descending from the upper reaches of the biome is a thundering waterfall. The noise of rushing water - a symbiotic partner to living rainforests - accompanies the refreshing breeze which is a result of the cascade.

Warm Temperate Biome

plants as perfume Plants as perfume

Enliven your senses with a collection of herbs designed to stimulate memory as well as our sense of smell.

Herbal use has had a variety of uses stretching over Mankind's history, from medicine, to cooking to aromatherapy.

shaw sculpture Tim Shaw - Vines

These sculptures were hand crafted by Tim Shaw, a professional sculptor.

The final figures were inspired by Dionysus, the Greek God of the vines and the mythologies which surround the ancient civilisation.

jansch cork sculptures Heather Jansch - Cork

Famous internationally for her driftwood sculptures, these sculptures were crafted from cork and dead wood. They represent some of the species of the open woodlands.

warm temperate landscape The contrasting landscape

The warm temperate biome is an example of the diverse landscapes to be found around the world.

The Mediterranean, South Africa and California are all represented by the types of plants to be found in these regions.

The contrast with the lush, Humid Tropics Biome is very noticable.
